Dr. Anthony Charles is a professor at Saint Mary’s University where he works in both the Sobey School of Business and the School of the Environment. His research focuses on governance, socioeconomics and sustainability of fisheries, oceans and coasts, with a particular emphasis on small-scale fisheries. Through transdisciplinary approaches, he studies their management and policy, their connections to ecosystem-based management, protected areas and climate change; community approaches to their governance; and issues of sustainability and local well-being. Currently, he leads the Community Conservation Research Network, an international initiative to explore how local-level conservation supports livelihoods and links with large-scale policy. Dr. Charles was the founding leader of Canada’s Ocean Management Research Network and the Coastal Community-University Research Alliance (Coastal CURA), as well as being a past President of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade, and a current member of the Fisheries Expert Group in IUCN. He has received international recognition as a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation and a recipient of the Gulf of Maine Visionary Award. Dr. Charles has produced over 200 research articles, reports and books, including two recent books, Governing the Coastal Commons: Communities, Resilience and Transformation (with Derek Armitage and Fikret Berkes) and Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation: Interaction and Co-evolution (with Serge Garcia and Jake Rice) – as well as a 2019 report for the United Nations on Addressing the Climate Change and Poverty Nexus, examining interactions of climate change mitigation and adaptation with poverty reduction and food security, notably in coastal areas.
